DO YOU KNOW THE HERENT REFUGEE WELCOME GROUP?

Championing a warm welcome for refugees in an inclusive community

Imagine arriving at a place where you don’t know the language or customs after a difficult journey… How do you start a new life?

The Herent Refugee Welcome Group (OGV) supports refugees who come to live in Herent to find their way and build their future.

This is done with volunteers. They commit themselves as buddies or organise group activities for newcomers.

Refugees can count on a buddy who will accompany them on their journey to overcome the many obstacles in the integration process. Housing, school, work, health insurance, driving license, administrative maze… you can use some help with all of that.

The volunteers from the welcome group work closely with social workers from the OCMW (Public Centre for Social Welfare) to achieve this.

The volunteers also create a safe and welcoming place where newcomers can be initiated in Dutch language and meet other residents of Herent: SAWA SAMEN, T-Babbel, and Fietsjevrij.

Huren voor Buren (Renting for Neighbours)

Finding affordable housing is no easy task. The non-profit organisation Huren Voor Buren tries to find a solution by renting houses and then subletting them to newcomers.
